BENUE: First Class Chiefs take Benue state Government to court

The 6 first class Chiefs in Tiv land have filed a suit against the Benue state government, and the Benue state House of Assembly challenging the directive by the Benue state government led by Samuel Ortom to 'revert to status quo "following their earlier appointment and confirmation by the Tiv Area Traditional council, and the Benue state government. Ruling on the suit today in Makurdi, the presiding judge,Justice Samson Itodo of high court 5, adjourned the case to the 22nd of July,2015 for determination of the substantive suit. Earlier in his argument, the counsel representing the Benue state government,Prof Tony Ijoho SAN sought for a little more time to look at the submissions of the substantive motion, since there were served just last week Friday. Justice Itodo did not object to the request and consequently 22nd of July,2015 was fixed for the next hearing. The 6 first class Chiefs are praying the court to declare the verbal directive which was aired on Radio Benue as null and void, and subsequently install them as the law establishing the chiefdoms provides. Chief Goddy Ikyerave, the Tor Gwer, one of the first class chiefs wondered why the law establishing the first class chiefdoms had not been repealed by the Benue state House of Assembly and a verbal directive could be issued annulling a properly constituted body.
